Synopsis: In Academy Award-winning writer/director Sofia Coppola's fourth feature, Jacob Moore (Jake Gyllenhaal) is in a big crisis. His little brother Danny (Josh Hutcherson) goes to the local high school, where he met Tara (Emma Watson,) whom he starts going out with. When she mysteriously is found dead on the lake shore, all fingers are pointed at Danny. At the same time, Jacob meets Jessica (Emily Mortimer,) and they become lovers. She is found dead three weeks after Tara is found, but they have near-same time of death. Their parents (Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep) can't believe the flying accusations against their sons, and their sister Patricia (Scarlett Johansson) starts searching for what happened.
The media circus that is surrounding forces everyone around Jacob and Danny to really wonder, "Could they?" Most of the accusations against Jacob are the fault of Jessica's parents (Tom Wilkinson and Helen Mirren,) who cannot possibly imagine anything that could've happened to her besides what they think Jacob has done. Somewhere along the line, Tara's mother, Mona (Laura Linney,) brings up the idea that both were killed by Danny, and Danny is arrested in 2 counts of first degree murder.
Patricia and Danny start investigating if Danny really did it, and realize that Jessica's sister Chloe (Kate Winslet) was acting very strange throughout the ordeal. Who killed Tara and Jessica? Was it really Danny? Were they even by the same person?
Release Date: October 24, 2008.
Rated PG-13 for language, stylized violence, and some sexuality.
What the press would say:
In only her fourth feature, Ms. Coppola has already achieved expert status. This entirely intriguing mystery has it all: brilliant direction, excellent acting from all, beautiful cinematography, expert and visualized editing, Meryl Streep. It starts out so quaint, humble. It ends in a fury of twists and turns, lies and deceits. Although he just turned 16, Josh Hutcherson gives an incredible and undeniably Oscar-worthy performance, showing a maturity and depth not seen in a young actor in many years. Oscar-winners Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep do their best acting years, which means their excellent. Last year's Best Actress Helen Mirren and Tom Wilkinson are great in the smaller roles that dig into your soul. Like always, Kate Winslet is a revelation, surely to get her 6th Academy Award nomination in 13 years.
Everything about this film works, with very little to complain about. One of the best films of the decade. But watch out, there are some things in this are incredibly horrible to both the psyche and the stomach. But it's all in good taste. It does have some "weird" moments, but that's what gives this movie it's beating heart. You won't figure out what happens at the end until it just happened.
Long story short: Go see this film. An incredible cast, excellent technical work, and a great and haunting score by Alexandre Desplat that is sure to bring home gold. It will bring gold everywhere, trust me. It's that good.
